Parents this is just a reminder that you should not use your cell phones while picking up students in the carpool lanes. Often parents are texting and/or talking on their cell phones while driving. Not only does this impair their abilities to navigate the vehicle in the driving lane, it is also a grave safety issue for staff who are conducting traffic and for students who are passengers in those vehicles. According to the CDC website on driving and cell phones, “ In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010. An additional, 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2011, compared to 416,000 people injured in 2010.” (http://www.cdc.gov/Motorvehiclesafety/Distracted_Driving/index.html :retrieved April 1, 2014)
Please note this is a violation of district policy! If you have any further concerns, or questions, please refer to the Rio Rancho Public Schools Website and review policy/procedures in the Sandia Vista Elementary School Parent and Student Handbook. PARCC Field Testing Coming to Sandia Vista Elementary School
Several SVE classes have been asked to participate in PARCC field testing this year. According to the New Mexico Department of Education, the field tests are an opportunity for districts to “experience both the content of the new PARCC tests as well as the process for administering the computer-based assessments.” The tests will not count for or against students, teachers, or schools in any way and no student achievement data will be generated based on field test performance. The PARCC assessments include two components: Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) and End-of-Year Assessment (EOY). These assessments are given in two separate testing windows. Please click here for additional information from RRPS regarding PARCC or click here for the Parent Handout.
RRPS Shining Stars Preschool has opened a satellite program for 4 year olds at Colinas del Norte Elementary School. There are a limited number of slots available. This is a free half day program. There are no fees and a hearty snack is included. If you know a child who is 4 and turned 4 before September 1, 2013, please have them call or come to our office for more information. Our number is 892-7735, ext. 511.
Parents are always welcome at the Sandia Vista. The safety of our students is of utmost importance. All visitors, including parents, are required to report to the Main Office to sign in. All visitors must present a current driver’s license or state ID in exchange for a visitor’s pass starting on January 7, 2014. RRPS schools utilize RAPTOR Visitor sign-in system which works with the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors should be prepared to present their photo ID at each school visited. A visitor, at the discretion of the principal, may be required to present photo ID on subsequent visits. On subsequent visits, the receptionist will ask the visitor to either scan their ID or enter their name into the computer. Please click here for further information.
We look forward to seeing you at school!
